The Pike Company provided construction services for the renovation, modernization and cogeneration system upgrade of the existing heating plant at Smith College. The project scope consisted of installing three primary components: a 3.5 MW Gas Turbine with Heat Recovery Steam Generator; a 65,000 lbs./hr. Packaged Steam Boiler producing 125 psig steam; and a 15 kV Metal-Clad Switchgear and Gas Turbine Generator Electrical Interface. The project required the demolition and removal of three coal fired boilers, baghouse, and coal handling systems. The gas turbine generator was installed in the bay previously occupied by one of the existing boilers with the Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) rated at 19,000 lbs./hr. installed receiving exhaust gas from the turbine. The packaged steam boiler was also installed in a bay previously occupied by one of the existing boilers and provides 65,000 lbs./hr. of additional steam distribution for the College. The remaining space vacated by the removal of the existing boiler is reserved for future cogeneration system expansion.
